Can I pack outside food (favorite snacks & drinks) in my luggage for my 4 yr old on a cruise ship to Europe?

Mama-loo asked:

I am going on a Mediterranean cruise with my 4 year old. Will I be able to pack his favorite snacks, cereal, crackers, juices in our luggage? He can be a finicky eater even when there’s kids buffet cruise food options available. I just want to bring something along so he can have snacks for when we’re on excursions & day trips.

Yes, you can. You just can’t bring soda or alcohol because they jack up the prices on these items haha. Snacks for your child will be fine…no biggie. I just got back from a Carnival cruise and I was very impressed with the food selection…I’m sure you guys are going to have a wonderful time!

Yes, the only things not allowed to be brought in port from the ship are fresh fruits and dairy products.

    Yup. Great idea also.
If you have soda drinkers in your group, id bring 1 12 pack of favorite soda for each 6 days, or you can always just get a soda card if its offered.

I have cruised the Med a couple times and here’s my advice.

Yes, you can pack those things in your checked luggage but just don’t take the juice in your carry-on bags. There are limited on liquids you can take on the plane. I would suggest not taking any fresh fruits but canned fruit packs should be OK as they don’t pose any threat of having agricultural pest. We have flown into Barcelona twice, into London once and into Madrid, Spain and there were no open bag inspections in any of those places. But I think the immigration cards ask if you have fruits or plants.

The other option for you is to buy whatever snacks you want when you get to the port city, assuming you have time to get to a store (I hope you are flying to the port city a day early). In addition, if you decide not to take snacks from home (or run out) you can also try to get them at port stops when they are available and bring them back on ship. The cruise ships control what you take off the ship in ports but the only thing they really control when you come back on (aside from prohibited things like drugs and guns) is alcohol you may buy (wine & liquor).

I regularly take a 6-pack of bottle water and a 6-pack of soft drinks (16 oz plastic bottles) in my carry on onto all of my cruises with no problem. I also take nuts because with all of the foods they have on ships they rarely have nuts. I have also bought and brought back to the ship other snacks like popcorn and chips.
