Is there a maximum EXCESS luggage that you are allowed to check-in on JetStar flights to Japan?

ship luggage

We just called JetStar today and the lady said that you are given 20kg free (plus 10kg carry-on) and then limited to paying extra for another 20kg. Problem here is that we’re relocating to Japan and have more than just a total 50kg in luggage to take. (We have also looked into shipping companies but as we have snowboards and one guitar it’s very costly shipping those through a separate company.) We told the lady that we were given an allowance from the company we are going to work for of $900 AUD so money isn’t an issue that we’d like to pay and take on more with us. She said no, it’s not allowed the most you can check is 50kg even if you are willing and able to pay for more. We found it strange hearing an airline refuse to take more money from us! We do understand that maybe it’s a space issue but since we can’t find this stipulated on the website we’re curious if anyone else has any info on this!
Thank you in advance!

Sounds completely normal. There is a limit to how much cargo space/weight capacity there is in a plane and hence the limit on the amount of luggage you can take. Have you tried to ship with the airline as cargo? It would take longer but this might be the best way. Also, if you will have friends come out to visit you in the near future, get them to bring some of the stuff that you will not immediately need.

no, because the more you check in, the more room you are taking away from other passengers, and they also have to use more fuel.

My suggestion for the larger items is to just sell them. I can understand about the guitar, you may be able to find another way to get it there. But with the snowboard, sell it; because I am sure that you can buy another one in Japan; where there is 100 times more snow than here in Australia.

see what items you have that you can sell that dont have senditmentle value to you. Yeah, you may have cherrished memories with things like a snowboard, but if you sell it for a good price, you can buy another one nearly the same when you get there!!
