richmck asked:
In order to reduce import tax & duty to the states from the U.K or vice versa, what would be the most economical way to bring in a mountain bike that weighs around 24.5 lbs
( 11 kilos ). I ask as I was told that if you bring in a bike as luggage and can prove it is not brand new it will not be as expensive. Different airlines have given confusing answers…

all at once
Carriage to different countries can be confusing. It actually costs less in duty to bring a bike into the US from the UK than it does to ship from the US to the UK.
If you pack it as luggage there is a deduction you can take… I think it is $500 coming into the US and 300GBP coming into the UK. Declare the bike as such and you should be good UNLESS the bike is worth more… always provide a good assessment of value… those customs guys are pretty sharp.
i agree…the whole thing
All at once ! It’s still going to weigh the same…Also they can only lose the whole bike and just not half the parts.
Depends….who is going to have to assemble it when you get it to it’s final destination…if you are…then ship it whole. but if you are going to take it to a shop to have it assembled the cost of someone else assembling it might equal, less or be larger then the cost of shipping it whole.
in peices it way cheapper
Luggage, with a passenger, would usually be cheaper.
Although, rates & regulations are always changing.
Taking apart & packing will cost you more, by weight.
If it’s brand new, you’ll be taxed for importing it.
